The main chemical components of chamotte are AL2O3 and SiO2, containing a small amount of Fe2O3 and traces of Na2O, K2O, the main mineral is kaolin, the impurities are mainly alkali, alkaline earth and oxides of iron, titanium, and some organic substances. The standard Al2O3 content of the original chamotte is 38%, after calcination the Al2O3 content is about 44%, and Fe2O3 <2%. The composition is stable, the texture is uniform, the structure is dense, the cross section is shell-like, white, and it is used to produce high-quality clay refractories. It is a first-class hard clay clinker, and various oxides play a fluxing role, which will reduce the refractoriness of the raw materials. The refractoriness of high-quality chamotte can reach above 1750℃.
After being calcined at high temperature, it has the characteristics of volume stability, high strength and low water absorption. The indexes to measure the sintering degree of it generally include true specific gravity, bulk density, porosity, water absorption, and shrinkage rate. The sintered gemstone with good sintering degree has a water absorption rate of less than 5% and a bulk density of more than 2.55g/cm3.
